The brick building, built around 1900, was used as a school until the beginning of the 21st century. The single monument stands at a predestined place in Wolgast on the access road to the island of Usedom. It is now used as a hostel for children, youth and group travel.

Participatory approach

The design was created in a participatory manner. In workshops, young people from the Wolgaster Runge Gymnasium developed ideas for redesigning the building in order to form the concept directly with the target group. The students first measured the building with their own bodies in order to get a feel for the dimensions of the building. Subsequently, the students spent half a school year on the topic of architecture and developed during various tasks concepts for the hostel's theme rooms.

The theme of the "Dream School _ The school where you are allowed to learn whatever you want" was the overriding guiding principle.

The students' designs and ideas were taken up and formed the framework for the topics of the themed rooms.

Building activity

During the renovation measures, the building structure was adapted to the new use. In order to make as little intervention as possible into the historical structure, the expansion was largely carried out in the existing building, and new walls were made using lightweight construction. Floor coverings and plasters to be preserved remained in the existing building or were renewed, if necessary, according to the historical structure.

In the basement area, community showers were installed in addition to the existing sanitary facilities. The walls were protected against rising damp by injection methods. On the upper floors, drywalls were installed for the division of the bedrooms. In addition, two smaller sanitary areas were installed on each floor. A handicapped accessible bathroom was installed on the ground floor, the installation of a platform lift enables barrier-free access from the courtyard into the building.

Bedrooms were also separated on the two top floors. The larger dormitories were given a second sleeping level in order to make optimal use of the high rooms and create opportunities for retreat. In the attic, the rooms that had already been used were converted into bedrooms and sanitary rooms. Here the insulation was renewed and the windows replaced by exit windows for rescue by the fire brigade. The sanitary and electrical installation was renewed throughout the whole building. To preserve the historic building in its original form, the renovation was carried out with consideration and in accordance with the preservation order.

Use

In the basement one can find the communal showers as well as a creative room, the “BunkeBunker” for handicrafts, work and music.

The main entrance area and the self-catering kitchen, the "SchüKü", are on the ground floor. An adjacent dining room, the "Klassenmampf", offers space for guests and groups. Furthermore, the staff room, the “liebe” (love), and the themed bedrooms “Improtheater” (improvisational theatre), “Ferne Kulturen” (distant cultures), “Dichterschule” (poetry school) and “Unterwasserwissenschaft” (underwater science) are on the ground floor.

The upper floor houses eight other themed bedrooms, such as „Astronomie“ (astronomy), „Tontechnik“ (sound engineering) or „Landwirtschaft“ (agriculture).

There are three themed bedrooms on the top floor, where you can spend the night in the „Gamedesign“ (game design), „Flugschule“ (flight school) or „Meditation“ (meditation). From single rooms to 6-bed dorms, the room sizes are adapted to the needs of the different user groups.
