Bergheider See is located in the Lusatian Lakeland, near Cottbus, right next to the F60 visitor mine. The region is largely shaped by the opencast mine. An impressive lunar landscape creates a very special atmosphere. Various events, such as concerts or music festivals, are already taking place at Bergheider See. The Bergheider lake should become the event lake. However, there is still a lack of suitable infrastructure and accommodation.

We first carried out a location analysis for Bergheider See as a hostel location. Part of the analysis was the investigation of the tourist offers located there, the infrastructure and the development and connection. The second part was the concept development and the preliminary design of an event hostel. The core target group of the hostel are sports tourists who come to (kite) surfing due to the good wind conditions. The events already taking place on site will additionally liven up the hostel.

The design takes up the uniqueness of the location - the deep contrast between the former heavy industry and the recurring nature. A two-part building corresponds to both elements. A steel bar with a stringent straightforwardness and technical architecture picks up on the rear steel structure of the F60 conveyor bridge. Here are the utility and common rooms, multipurpose rooms and kitchen / dining room. The second part of the building has an organic shape as a curved wave and represents nature. It is to be built using sustainable, ecological timber construction and houses the bedrooms.
